Poor Red's - An El Dorado County Icon

Poor Red's - An El Dorado County Icon

Ask almost any El Dorado County resident that has lived here at least a year or two if they know where Poor Red's is and they will have either been there or know where to find it. It's an El Dorado County icon and is even used as a reference point."Do you know Map showing Poor Red's locationwhere Poor Red's is? Well from there....."  I'll never forget the look of disbelief I got when I answered "No" to that question.  The first thing I did when I got home was look it up!

People have come from all over for their BBQ and Gold Cadillac.  When we first moved to El Dorado Hills in 1996, I heard so much about it from people as the one place we had to go.  I was a little surprised when I first went there as it is a bit of a dive!

A group of us recently stopped there on our way home from Young's Winery Release Party for a round of their famous Gold Cadillac.  I picked up this post card as a memento and thought I'd share it along with a little Poor Red's history and trivia.

Post card of Poor Red's - El Dorado CA

The building was built in 1857 and served as a weigh station for Wells Fargo Bank.  From 1927- 1945 it was known as Kelly's Bar.  Rumor has it Red won the bar in a dice game and changed the name to Poor Red's in the early 1950s. The Gold Cadillac was created around 1951 for a patron to match her new gold colored Cadillac.  The drink is made of Galliano, half n half, white crème de cocoa, and ice blended and frothy.  I have to say - they are yummy! Murals on the walls depict some of the history, former employees and patrons.

Enjoying a Gold Cadillac at Poor Red's in El Dorado CA

Here's some trivia I found on the back of my post card:

Most bottles consumed in one night = 87.  At 12 shots per bottle = 1044 Gold Cadillacs

In 1999 Galliano proclaimed Poor Red's the largest consumer in the world = 3% of the American market.

Poor Red's has sold as many as 52 tons of ribs in one year.

So the next time you are driving through the town of El Dorado stop into Poor Red's and check out this El Dorado County Icon.  You never know how long it will be around.

DeeDee - The next time Craig wants ribs I'll suggest we drive down and check out Poor Red's! I know I'd enjoy the Gold Cadillac and he love BBQ, so it's a winning ticket!  This was a great review and I loved the local information about Poor Red's.  Terrific post!
